The Judging Process

The Halton Business Awards are built on fairness and a genuine commitment to celebrating excellence across our Borough and the wider region. Every stage of judging is designed to be transparent, consistent and robust, ensuring businesses of all sizes have the opportunity to shine.

Independent Judging Panels

All judging panels are fully independent and made up of respected representatives from across Halton and the wider business community who kindly volunteer their time. Judges are selected for their expertise, sector knowledge and commitment to supporting local enterprise.

To maintain impartiality, we make every effort to minimise any potential conflicts of interest when judging panels are created.

Stage One: Individual Scoring

Every entry is reviewed and scored individually by multiple judges. This ensures each submission is assessed on its own merits, without influence from group discussion.
The combined scores from this stage determine the official shortlist and finalists for each award category

Stage Two: Panel Deliberation?

Shortlisted entries then progress to an in-person judging panel (of which there are several). These panels review the highestscoring submissions, discussing the strengths and impact of each entrant against the published scoring criteria. Category winners are agreed through a structured and balanced decisionmaking process.

Interview Based Categories

A small number of categories – Apprentice/Young Person of the Year, Business Leader of the Year and StartUp Business of the Year – include a short interview as part of the judging process.

These interviews are conducted by an additional judge (Apprentice/Young Person) or panel of judges (Business Leader of the Year and Start Up of the Year) and are designed to give candidates the opportunity to talk in more depth about their organisation, role, achievements and ambitions.
All interviews are friendly, supportive and conversational so if you are lucky enough to be selected for an interview, you have nothing to worry about. In fact, many participants tell us that they genuinely enjoy the experience as our aim is always to create an environment where people feel confident and proud to share their story.

Outstanding Business of the Year

Once all category winners have been confirmed, every judge is invited to nominate the business they believe should receive the prestigious Outstanding Business of the Year award. These nominations are collated confidentially and only the operational team administering the awards sees the final result. This means that no one attending the Gala Dinner as a guest, including the judges, knows the winner until the moment of the big reveal on the Awards Night itself.

A Process You Can Trust

From start to finish, the judging process is designed to be fair, independent and inclusive. Our goal is simple: to celebrate the very best of Halton’s business community and ensure every entrant is able to celebrate their achievements with an opportunity to gain the recognition they deserve.

Please Note:
No involvement from Chamber employees
Halton Chamber employees do not take part in any aspect of the judging process, in fact they do their best to stay as far away from the judging as possible! Hopefully you understand that as Halton Chamber works closely with many businesses across the Borough, it would be impossible for them to choose – they genuinely want every organisation to succeed and win!

This separation ensures complete independence and protects the integrity of the awards.

Chamber Membership status is not a consideration
Judges are not informed and therefore would not necessarily know if an entrant is a Chamber Member or actively involved with the Chamber. This forms no part of the judging criteria.

The awards are open to all Halton‑based organisations, regardless of whether they belong to Halton Chamber or any other membership body. Every business is assessed solely on the strength of its entry.

Sponsor Involvement
Sponsors play an important role in supporting the Halton Business Awards, but they do not necessarily take part in any aspect of the judging process. If a judge happens to also be an employee of a sponsoring organisation, they would have no say and no involvement with the category that they are sponsoring. This separation ensures complete independence and protects the integrity and fairness of the awards.

Sponsors are welcome to enter the awards themselves, provided they do not submit an entry into the category they are sponsoring. This approach allows sponsors to celebrate their own achievements while maintaining a clear and transparent boundary between sponsorship and judging.

Confidentiality of Information
All information submitted as part of the Halton Business Awards is treated in strict confidence. Judges only receive the details they need to assess each entry and they are required to keep all materials, discussions and scoring confidential.
No entry information is shared outside the judging process.
This commitment to confidentiality ensures that businesses can speak openly and honestly about their achievements, challenges and ambitions, knowing their information is handled with care and professionalism.
